Name of work: Strengthening of the old bridge and replacement of elastomeric bearings and expansion joints

The existing bridge was in a dilapidated condition with bearing punched, bearing pedestals crushed, the deck slab concrete exposed, expansion joint damaged, the railing was totally damaged, span levels disturbed. The project is completed with strengthening of girders by increasing the density through epoxy injection grouting, repairing the spalled portion with micro concrete, increasing the thickness of the diaphragm through jacketing. Lifting the span and replacing the elastomeric bearings, removing the existing damaged expansion joint and replacing with new strip seal joint.

Methodology:

  • Chipping: chipping of existing concrete loose portions in the girders, deck slab.
  • Strengthening: Treating the exposed steel rods with anticorrosive treatment, filling the spalled concrete with micro concrete, Filling the loose pockets in the concrete with epoxy through injection grouting. Jacketing the diaphragm, etc.
  • Replacement of bearings: Lifting the spans with appropriate jacks and power pumps, removing the existing bearings, recasting the pedestals, placing the steel plates.
  • Replacement of expansion joint: Removal of existing damaged expansion joint and replacing with new strip seal and checking levels and aligning with the approach.
